Hollywood can sometimes be a mirror to reality, but often they get it very wrong. Case in point: dentists. If you think about how dental professionals are portrayed in the media, chances are it’s negative. Remember the sinister dentist portrayed by Steve Martin in “Little Shop of Horrors?” That’s just one example. In fact, even kids’ movies show the dentist as being someone mean, like the dentist-diver who abducts poor Nemo in “Finding Nemo.” Sure, it’s all fiction, but as harmless as this trope may seem, it can cause real damage to those who have dental anxiety. Here’s why there’s no reason to fear the dentist, and some ways to make your next appointment a lot less scary!
Dentists Are on Your Team!
Your dentist is well trained to help you take excellent care of your oral health. Whether you’re getting a cleaning, a cosmetic treatment, or you need an urgent procedure, they only want what’s best for you and your mouth. Your dentist will never recommend anything you don’t need or want, and they’re not here to judge you for cavities, not being great about flossing, or for anything else you could be ashamed of. They truly want to see you live your best life and showcase your beautiful smile!
Making Your Appointment Easier
Many people are so afraid to see the dentist that they avoid appointments, causing a litany of oral health issues like cavities and gum disease to get worse with time. Your dentist wants you to come in regularly to prevent this type of situation and is happy to make your visit as easy as possible. That’s why some dentists offer sedation dentistry options for their patients.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide is probably the most common form of sedation dentistry. This colorless gas is often described as smelling sweet, and it has no lasting effects once you stop breathing it. It creates a very peaceful calm; however, you are still fully awake and aware while using it, and you are still able to answer questions and communicate with your dentist with ease. It is administered through a mask that fits over your nose and mixed with oxygen. When your procedure is complete, your dentist will turn off the nitrous oxide and you will breathe pure oxygen for about five minutes until it wears off. You are then free to go about your day with no side effects.
Intravenous Sedation
Intravenous or IV sedation creates a much deeper calm than nitrous oxide, however it does require the use of an IV. Because of this, you will need to have a ride to and from your appointment and will need to rest for the remainder of the day to allow the effects to completely wear off. IV sedation can be performed at varying degrees, so you can remain awake but relaxed, or if you choose you can be completely asleep, even for routine exams and cleanings. Speak to your dentist about your options prior to your appointment so this can be arranged in advance.
Remember, your dentist is here to make your life better, not worse. Don’t let Hollywood stereotypes scare you away from protecting your oral health. If you still need a little extra help relaxing at your appointment, speak to your dentist about sedation dentistry!
